Scientific research must have a positive influence on society. I was very happy, therefore, when the two directors Gustav Hofer and Luca Ragazzi contacted me for their investigation on machismo, a subject on which a profound reflection and awareness is needed – not only in the Italian society.

Thus, last year Gustav and Luca came to visit in Bicocca. We chatted about the automatic aspects of sexism and I administered them an IAT that measured the women-family / men-work association, to highlight their automatic reactions. They then continued their round of interviews and shootings throughout Italy.

After the world premiere at Toronto’s Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, last month the documentary was released in Italian cinemas and I could finally see it (it made me quite an effect to see myself projected on the screen in a cinema, while I administered the IAT to the two directors!). The documentary deserves to be seen: It is a honest and balanced description of the machismo that permeates our society.

La ricerca scientifica deve avere un impatto positivo sulla società. È per questo motivo che mi ha fatto molto piacere quando, tempo fa, sono stata contattata da Gustav Hofer e Luca Ragazzi, che stavano progettando un’indagine sul maschilismo, un tema sul quale è necessaria una profonda riflessione e presa di coscienza (in Italia e non solo).

Così, l’anno scorso Gustav e Luca sono venuti a trovarmi in Bicocca. Abbiamo chiacchierato riguardo agli aspetti automatici del sessismo e si sono prestati a rispondere ad uno IAT che misurava l’associazione donne-famiglia/uomini-lavoro, per mettere in luce le loro reazioni automatiche. I due registi hanno poi continuato il loro giro di interviste e riprese per tutta Italia e anche all’estero. Qui sotto, per esempio, Gustav e Luca descrivono una scena molto interessante, girata a Madrid:

Dopo l’anteprima mondiale all’Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival di Toronto, il mese scorso il documentario è uscito nei cinema italiani e ho potuto finalmente vederlo. Mi è piaciuto molto: è una descrizione onesta ed equilibrata del maschilismo che permea la nostra società, presentata in modo leggero ma corretto (e ammetto che mi ha fatto un certo effetto vedermi proiettata sullo schermo in un cinema, mentre somministravo lo IAT ai due registi). Con le parole di Gustav e Luca: “Con DICKTATORSHIP abbiamo voluto raccontare come una società fallocentrica e patriarcale non possa produrre che atteggiamenti maschilisti e sessisti. E come questi siano trasversali e indipendenti dal ceto sociale, dalla provenienza geografica, dall’orientamento politico. (…) Ma attenzione, questo non vuole essere un film contro il maschio: piuttosto il tentativo di capire cosa sta succedendo nella nostra società, ancora prepotentemente dominata da uomini bianchi e – almeno ufficialmente – eterosessuali. La storia è stata scritta da loro e per loro, ma è giunto il momento di far levare altre voci.”
